How to Keep Your Lawn Green in South Carolina's Summer Heat
South Carolina summers push lawns to their limits. Upstate SC homeowners in Greenville, Anderson, Easley, and Travelers Rest deal with temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F.
Water deeply but infrequently
Most Upstate SC lawns need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. Water two to three times per week for longer sessions. The best time to water is early morning between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
Raise your mowing height
For Bermuda grass keep it around 1.5 to 2 inches. For fescue lawns aim for 3.5 to 4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil and reduces moisture loss.
Don't skip fertilization
Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia benefit from fertilization in late spring and mid-summer, while fescue lawns should be fertilized primarily in fall and early spring.
Watch for signs of stress
If your grass takes on a bluish-gray tint or footprints stay visible after walking on it, your lawn needs water. Address it quickly before the grass goes dormant.
